As we have been looking at the profound principle of rest and Sabbath that runs throughout the Bible (because it runs throughout the nature of God) we finished this week by asking a simple yet perplexing question…So what?

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

In a little letter tucked away at the back of the New Testament comes this game-changing challenge. In the same way that when you re-work your hair after looking in the mirror and seeing it’s gone wild, or that you might add some salt having tasted a bland meal you’re cooking, or stand in a different place to get a clearer signal on your phone if it is plagued by static…reading life-giving truth from God requires us to make a change, to do something about it.

No chef sends out a bland meal. To not make the necessary changes once you know they need making is the act of a fool, and a really bad chef! Equally, if we were to spend a month thinking about how the radical teaching of Jesus that we should Invest in Rest, that we should build peace giving and re-creating activity into our life on purpose, that we should diary our lives in such a way that we have space and time…and then not do anything in response, we would be fools.

So here is what I am doing. Moving my day off. The day of the week I was taking it was not working, I was never rested on it and normally ended up doing loads of little jobs. The new rhythm works much better. Am also making an effort not to surf the net aimlessly in the evenings and have stuck some things in the diary which I know will refresh me…hanging out with mates, playing sport…eating burgers…that kind of thing!

What are you going to do?…
